Are You Practicing Healthcare Insanity?
Albert Einstein defined INSANITY as doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result. The sad fact is, if you keep doing what you’re doing you’ll keep getting what you’ve got.
Insanity is what keeps most people from realizing their health and wellness goals.
The reason being that success for most people requires change, change in how you think and change in doing what you do. Change is something that can be very difficult.
When people start to think about improving their health they will approach a health care specialist and say.”I want to get healthy and stay that way. What do I need to do?”
From there, they may undergo an evaluation and receive recommendations for what they can do to reach their goal.
They may be recommended a course of chiropractic care, an exercise program, a diet, quitting smoking, cutting down on drinking, meditation, counseling, or more.
The person who is ready to start working toward their wellness goal gets in motion and creates a plan for change.
The person who is not ready to change quickly begins to list their excuses for not being able to make the necessary changes: I don’t have the time, I don’t have the money, I don’t have the energy, I don’t like to exercise, It’s just too hard.
They develop an extreme case of EXCUSITIS and there is only one cure for excusitis – getting into ACTION!
The hardest part of this journey is taking the first step. And, the first step in overcoming insanity is changing your mind and deciding to do things differently.
Failing to take this first step will immediately halt any progress and make the effort expended to start your program fruitless.
Have you ever seen the old western movies where an old miner is trying to move his stubborn mule, loaded down with gear, up a steep trail?
The mule doesn’t want to go and there is nothing the old man can do to convince the mule that it would be to his benefit to climb the trail with that heavy load on his back. He’s NOT going!
The miner has to find a way to make it the mule’s idea to move so he dangles a carrot from a string tied to a stick and hangs it in front of the mule. Finally, the mule has a reason to move forward.
This story reflects EXACTLY how some people react to starting their wellness program. They prepare their list of excuses and hunker down behind them. If one gets knocked away, they replace it with another until the desire is gone.
They become paralyzed by EXCUSITIS and never take the first step. It is unfortunate that the first step is so simple.
Think about it. The first step is changing your mind. Like the stubborn old mule, all you need is a carrot.
What is it that inspires you to move forward?
It could be fitting in a dress or pair of pants you haven’t worn since high school, sleeping through the night, running in a marathon or just being able to play with the grandchildren you’re going to have some day.
Whatever it is, find your inspiration and take the first step toward it. The rest will follow.
Now you have no reason to be insane. Do something different today to help you to create your better tomorrow.
